Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly in talks with Genk to sign highly-rated Norwegian defensive midfielder Sander Berge.

Berge, who turns 21 next month, sees his present deal with the Belgian outfit expire in June 2021 but there’s no guarantee of him fulfilling that contract.

Who is Spurs target Sander Berge? Five key things to know…

  1. Berge, born and raised in Bærum, Norway, left boyhood club Asker to join Valerenga in February 2015.
  2. He would play 43 times for Valerenga before relocating to Belgium in January 2017 and to date has represented Genk across 71 matches in all competitions.
  3. He made his senior Norway debut aged 19 against Northern Ireland on March 26, 2017.
  4. Berge, a natural defensive midfielder, has since attracted the attention of Fiorentina, AC Milan and Roma.
  5. Genk, loathe to lose him, are said to value Berge at €25m (£22.5m)

A number of clubs have been tracking Berge, who normally sits in front of the defence, with interest predominantly coming from Serie A in Fiorentina, AC Milan and Roma. But according to Italian transfer news outlet TMW, it seems Spurs have stolen a march on their rivals.

The Londoners famously became the first Premier League club to not sign a player ahead of a season last summer, but with Mauricio Pochettino’s men looking to fight on both domestic and European fronts, there is an onus on strengthening their squad.

However, as TMW claim, Berge – if he were to sign for Spurs – would be immediately loaned back to Genk to complete their 2018/19 campaign and join the Lillywhites ahead of next season.

Adrien Rabiot snubs Spurs?

It’s hard to imagine Spurs going another transfer window without having brought a player in.

One individual unlikely to be linking up with Harry Kane and company is Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

The 23-year-old Frenchman is expected to leave the Parc des Princes due to a contract dispute. Barcelona are heavily linked, but Spurs were also among the other names said to be interested.

However, according to ESPN FC, the native of Saint-Maurice feels Pochettino’s side are unable to match his ambitions. And even if Rabiot were keen on playing for Spurs, it is noted, his €10m yearly salary demands and signing-on fee would prove prohibitive for a club feeling the pain of a heft construction bill for the new White Hart Lane-based stadium.
