Teddy Sheringham thinks Tottenham will not prevent Mauricio Pochettino from taking over at Manchester United.

Jose Mourinho was sacked after presiding over a terrible start to United’s Premier League campaign. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over as the caretaker manager until the end of the season, but speculation persists as to who will inherit the reins after the Norwegian’s time is up.

Mauricio Pochettino the next Man Utd boss? Five things to know…

  1. Mauricio Pochettino led Tottenham to their highest Premier League points total in the 2016/17 season (86).
  2. He was linked with the Manchester United job in 2016 after dining with legendary former boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
  3. The Argentinian, who is 7/2 favourite to be United’s next permanent manager, signed a new deal with Tottenham earlier in 2018.
  4. It is reported Pochettino would like to manage United but would cost the 20-time English champions £34m to release him from his Spurs contract.
  5. Nonetheless, Teddy Sheringham, who played for both clubs, predicts he will replace caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

For Sheringham, who played for Tottenham and United during his career, Pochettino is the only candidate the Red Devils should consider.

“There’s only one candidate for me. Pochettino is doing all the right things at Tottenham,” Sheringham told Love Sport Radio.

“People will say he hasn’t won anything but he’s transformed things in north London. He’s got them on the right path.

“He gets players playing to the best of their capabilities and that’s what you want as a manager.”

Sheringham added that he doesn’t think Spurs will stand in the Argentine’s way if he wants to head to Old Trafford.

He explained: “I don’t think it’s a case of whether Spurs will let him go and I don’t think it’s about money. I think it’s just about what Pochettino wants to do. If United want him and he wants to go I don’t think Tottenham will stand in his way.

“You can’t turn down the chance to join Manchester United as a player and it must be exactly the same as a manager.”

Could Solksjaer be the right man?

When the Norwegian was given the United job, he was blessed with a fortunate run of fixtures that have already helped him ease into the hot seat at Old Trafford. His first four games are against sides playing at the bottom of the Premier League table.

And the legendary treble-winner has enjoyed a successful start to life in United’s dugout with emphatic wins in the Premier League over Cardiff City, Huddersfield Town and Bournemouth. Solksjaer’s first big test comes in the new year when he will head to Wembley to face Pochettino. United are eight points behind the top four and Solskjaer’s United will have to be near perfect if he hopes to make his temporary role a permanent one.

Sheringham, who along with Solksjaer scored the crucial goals in United’s Champions League triumph in 1999, wishes his former teammate all the luck in the world: “Solskjaer isn’t a proven manager but he’s an Old Trafford favourite after everything he achieved as a player there.

“United are the biggest club in the world so you’ve got to go for the best man, but you never know, he might set the world alight up there.

“He’s a lovely man first and foremost and I wish him all the luck in the world, because it’s a massive job he’s taken on.

“If you get the right results there might be a case that you can’t [not] put him in charge.”
