Fokina, currently ranked 35th in the world, has been reliable this year, but he has had trouble translating excellent performances into tournament-winning runs, losing in the quarterfinals of five tournaments thus far. Rune has been consistent this year and entered the competition in great shape, having already competed in and reached the finals of two tournaments this month (one in Monte Carlo and another in Munich, where he successfully defended his title). In Munich, Rune advanced to the final after defeating Cristian Garin and Christopher O’Connell. He then faced Botic Van De Zandschulp, who put up a valiant fight but was defeated in three epic sets. The Dane is currently ranked seventh in the world after winning his first championship of the year, and he seems to be most at home on the clay court, where he has gone 8-1 so far this season. Rune’s first match was a nail-biter against Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan, who pushed the match to three sets before ultimately losing (6-1 4-6 7-6). The Dane, facing this opponent for the first time, must work to reduce the number of unforced errors he made in their previous meeting or risk being eliminated from the tournament at an early stage.
