USA goalkeeper Zack Steffen looks set to complete a £6m move to Manchester City in January after fellow MLS gloveman Patrick McLain appeared to confirm the transfer on Instagram.

Reports claim that Steffen has agreed to join Pep Guardiola’s side in the new year, but will be loaned out straightaway as the club attempt to obtain a work permit for him.

Zack Steffen to Manchester City – Done deal?

  • Steffen made his USMNT debut earlier and has established himself as their first choice goalkeeper.
  • Columbus Crew snapped up Steffen in July 2016 and his good form seems to have earned him a move to the Premier League champions.
  • Chicago Fire goalkeeper Patrick McLain looks to have confirmed the transfer on Instagram.
  • The Columbus Crew goalkeeper kept 11 clean sheets in 33 MLS appearances last season.

Steffen’s transfer appears to have been confirmed by Patrick McLain, a friend of the City-bound youngster and Chicago Fire goalkeeper.

McLain commented on one of Steffen’s most recent Instagram posts by saying: “Congrats on the new team dude, crush it over there!”

BBC Sport are reporting that the move is expected to cost City around £7 million.

Steffen has already tried his luck at European football, moving to Bundesliga side SC Freiburg in 2014. However, he failed to break through to their first team and joined Columbus Crew around 18 months later.

Ederson’s long-term competition? What do City have in mind for Steffen?

City have an interesting link to the MLS and pinched Jack Harrison from sister club New York City FC at the start of last year.

However, Harrison is one of a number of young players that City have loaned out this season and the signing of 23-year-old Steffen could be a similar type of signing.

But with Claudio Bravo approaching the final six months of his City contract and currently sidelined with injury, it could be that Guardiola and his staff are lining up Steffen as Bravo’s long-term successor.

Current second choice goalkeeper Arijanet Muric is likely to seek first team football next year, too, so Steffen may be needed sooner rather than later.
